Seesmic for iPhone is a new Twitter, Facebook and all-round social networking client app. It includes support for Twitter, Facebook, and Ping.fm – so you can update a slew of social network sites within just the one app.

Here’s a little more detail straight from Seesmic’s Intro email for the app:

Seesmic for iPhone brings an efficient perspective to social networking on a mobile platform. An application which enables Twitter, Facebook and Ping.fm – letting you update dozens of social networks at once (including MySpace, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Flickr, Blogger, and many more!), Seesmic for iPhone gives you the ability to see your friends timeline, your mentions and private messages, update or delete statuses, post links, upload pictures, geotag your updates and access user profiles. You can organize your accounts, searches, lists and trending topics all in a customized dashboard and navigate easily through it.

Your Dashboard, Your Way.

When you first open Seesmic for iPhone, you can configure multiple pages of “spaces” and personalize the application the way you want. You can add spaces that are Accounts, Searches, Trending Topics, Lists and soon many more!

The app’s UI is a pretty standard one. It looks like quite a few Twitter apps in its timeline views and is fairly easy to navigate around. It’s also got a decent set of features.

The one feature that stands out in the app – for me – is its integration with Evernote. You can easily save things out to Evernote from right within the app. It works very well too – creates a brand new note, and auto-populates tags with the names of people whose posts you chose to save. Very good stuff if you’re an Evernote user.

It’s not a must-have app for me, as I rarely spend any time with Facebook and have no need or desire to update dozens of social networks at once via Ping.fm. If you do need that sort of versatility though, this could be an ideal single app solution.

*** Warning: This post is being written while deeply frustrated and outright pissed off at how much time I’ve wasted this morning with this app – so take it with as many grains of salt as needed. Also, although my experience covered here is with the iPad version of this app I fully expect that the same issues would apply with the iPhone app.

iDisplay for iPad sounded like a nice idea – a neat way to display apps running on my MacBook over on the iPad’s screen. A great place to put Twitter, an IM client, or whatever else seemed handy at different times.

Unfortunately, my experience with the app has been somewhere south of horrendous and it has been removed from my iPad and my MacBook Pro.

iDisplay requires that you use a (free) desktop companion app on your Mac (no Windows version as yet – count yourselves lucky) in order to work. That’s pretty standard stuff – so I downloaded and installed the desktop app. Its setup instructions offered a warning about making sure you uncheck the ‘Mirror Displays’ checkbox under System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement before doing the (required) restart of the Mac when the app’s install was complete. This was the first bad omen for me – as that checkbox did not appear anywhere for me – in fact the ‘Arrangement’ tab didn’t even appear for me. Both of those only showed up *after* the restart.

What also showed up after the restart was this:

– My screen resolution had been changed – to a much lower setting that had all my app windows looking huge and dopey.

– My Dock was no longer able to be positioned on the right of my screen, where I have long preferred to have it. Presumably this is because iDisplay by default wants you to shunt things over to the right edge of the screen to move them to be displayed on the iPad.

I have to say I hate when apps make changes like these without ever warning you beforehand – and hate it even more when they are changes that throw off your entire setup of your machine. Changing the screen resolution buggered up the sizing and positioning of every single one of my apps I use daily. And just resetting the resolution did not fix that – after several restarts, I am still dicking around with window sizes that are not back to being all the way right.

Oh, and even after uninstalling iDisplay (with AppDelete), I still have not managed to get my Dock to position on the right – no doubt thanks to some little ‘legacy’ bit of junk the app left within Display settings.

I did try out using iDisplay a little – in between bouts of trying to get my MacBook looking anywhere close to how I’ve had it looking for months. This was also an utter Fail. The app’s guidance on how to use it is minimal and not helpful. To say that using it is awkward and clumsy would be an understatement. My understanding was that dragging an app on my Mac towards the right edge of the screen would make it display on the iPad – instead this took my app to never-never land. It basically disappeared from the Mac screen and did not appear on the iPad. In trying to correct that and get the app back, I ended up dragging a desktop alias off the right edge as well, so it no longer showed up on the desktop.

Honestly, I only spent about 5 minutes with the app. Your mileage with it may vary of course, and my problems may be down to user error and my own clumsiness with it. But I’d still say it’s a very poor UI that makes it even possible to have such a frustrating, non-productive time with it. The app basically did nothing I wanted it to, and also hid away a desktop icon that I ended up having to re-add via Finder.

After 5 minutes of frustration with the app itself, and an hour of restarts and re-jigging of system display due to iDisplay’s screw-up of settings, it was time to remove the app, with prejudice. Here’s another charming thing about it: when you go to run the uninstall app for it, per its Readme document, you get a prompt that in order to uninstall it you are required to install a new app. WTF??? I almost thought that was a joke when I first saw it. Went back and re-read the Readme doc, tried again – and seriously, to uninstall this app it wants me to install another app. Unbelievable. Given that iDisplay itself has already sabotaged my morning, there was no way I was going to install anything further related to it – so I just used AppDelete to remove it.

Here’s my quick summary of this app:

– Setup instructions are inaccurate. Setup also makes changes that you are NOT asked or warned about and that can cause huge headaches.

– If you like having your Mac Dock positioned on the right, this app is not for you.

– Uninstall routine for this is ridiculous.

– This is easily the worst $5 I have spent in the iPhone or iPad App Store.

If you’d like to try your luck with the iPhone version of this one, you can find it in the App Store now, priced at $4.99.

Over the past few days, I’ve had the pleasure of playing around with a word-search game called Mumble Jumble. It features three different game modes that can each be played alone or with a friend.

The thing that immediately stands out about the game is how well-designed it is. The interface and visuals are very minimal and pleasing to the eyes. The sounds are simple and appropriate, which is perfect for this type of game. The visuals and sounds never distract you from the game itself which, with a game like this, is all you can really ask for.

But games aren’t purchased based solely on their looks. What really matters is how well they play. Fortunately, Mumble Jumble performs well in this area as well.

No matter what mode you choose, your goal is the same: string together connecting letters to form words. When you tap a letter, all of the potential connecting letters are highlighted. Keep stringing together letters to form the biggest word possible. The bigger the word, the more points you earn.

The game is very pick-up-and-play friendly. The learning curve is very small, and the game sucks you in quite quickly.

Here are the three modes of play:

Quick Column: The board starts off full of letters with a green sliding bar at the top. Your goal is to clear at least one column before the green bar reaches the bottom.

Raining C’s & D’s: In this mode, the green bar is your friend. It starts off at the bottom, and two rows of letters fill the bottom. Letters will periodically drop onto the board as you play. As you score points, the green bar moves towards the top. You clear the level by getting the green bar to the top before any column.

Tug of War: Here, the green bar can be your enemy or your best friend. The board starts off filled with letters and stays that way. As you form words and score points, the bar scoots towards the top. If you don’t, it falls downward. You advance to the next level by getting the green bar to the top.

While playing, you’ll come across some silver and gold marks on letters. Forming words that include a silver letter doubles your score, while gold letters triple the score. If you use two colored letters in one word, the score multiplies even more.

Each mode goes up to level 100, and you can get up to ten gold tiles in one game. That provides the game with plenty of replay value. When you add in the fact that you can play with a friend, you get a lot of bang for your buck.

From a design standpoint, I do have one complaint. When you launch the game, you are taken immediately to the game board. By tapping the “Menu” button, you can adjust a bunch of settings, including the speed that the game moves (which is like a pseudo-difficulty setting), a plethora skinning options, and more.

What isn’t immediately clear, however, is that this is also where you select your game mode. I wish the game launched to a screen where you choose what mode you want to play.

On the plus side, the game saves your progress when you exit the app.

If you are at all interested in word search games, you have to check out Mumble Jumble. It’s very easy to play and has a ton of replay value.

Mumble Jumble is available now in the App Store for $2.99.

Opera Software, maker of the world’s most popular mobile Web browser, plans to reveal Opera Mini for iPhone in an exclusive press and partner preview during the 2010 Mobile World Congress (MWC). Visit Opera’s exhibit in Hall 1, C44, to witness a new way to surf the Web on the iPhone — an experience that Opera promises will be fast, easy to use, and packed with favorite Opera features.

The Opera Mini browser – popular on Windows Mobile and other mobile platforms – is on its way to the iPhone, or at least to being submitted for approval and entry into the App Store.

I haven’t used or seen the Opera browser in years and am perfectly happy with Safari on the iPhone, but I’m all for some healthy competition and alternatives as well.

Are you excited to see Opera coming to the iPhone? Would it displace Safari on your phone if it gets approved and works as expected?

Amongst the quite small list of changes that Apple mentioned when the 3.1.3 iPhone OS update was released was: improvement in the accuracy of reported battery levels on the iPhone 3GS.

Ironically, just a week after that update’s release, there are reports that users are having some serious battery related issues after updating to 3.1.3 …

According to the details so far, the battery issues are suggesting that the iPhones are running hot, well hotter than normal and that the battery status indicator has been jumping around widely. That is not necessarily saying the battery life has gotten worse, just that it is not being accurately reported. But at the same time, there has also been some reports of users claiming that they are now seeing lost hours in terms of battery life.

I haven’t done the update to 3.1.3 as yet, because there’s no great new feature to make me tempted, and I am very fond of my current jailbreak setup and have no desire to mess with it for anything short of a major update from Apple.

Have any of you updated to 3.1.3 yet? If so, have you seen any of these reported issues?

The JAiB Brain Trust met last Tuesday at the offices of Googlius Male to discuss the recent rise of note-taking applications on the iPhone platform. Unfortunately, no consensus was reached, as each team member insisted on naming a different note-taking application as their favourite.

In an effort to appear as though are still deserving of their lofty positions, the members decided to throw all of the names of their favourite note apps into a list and publish them on site. The group has decided to reconvene next Tuesday to discuss another important topic relating to iPhoneology, but until then, maybe you’ll want to read this.

Thomas suggests: Simplenote
Of course you knew I’d be talking about this one – I’ve done so before, so I’ll be quick about it. Simplenote is a free notes app that keeps in constant sync with a web app at www.simplenoteapp.com. There are a few native Mac clients available in the Extras section of the website, but nothing for Windows at the moment.

I like Simplenote for its minimal interface. It doesn’t take all that much to create a working notes app, but after using Simplenote for a while, other apps start to feel a little crowded. There’s something elegant about having just a New, Delete, Mail, and Done button, and then never having to worry about syncing or saving.

Diego adds:
…you could [add] that there’s a widget for osx dashboard called
Dashnote, it’s awesome and good looking. It replaced Notational Velocity on my mac.

Patrick suggests: Notes Pro and Evernote
I’ll offer two, both of which I use daily: Evernote and Notes Pro. Evernote because it is my ‘throw everything into it’ storage bucket that follows me across web, desktop and iPhone. (just as an aside, it’s really everything non-confidential that I throw into it) Notes Pro offers much (MUCH) nicer text input and editing than Evernote, and it exports to Google Docs, which I find quite useful, although they’ve been promising (and not delivering) proper two-way sync for ages.

I’d love to see either of these two things happen so I’d just need one of these:
Evernote finally makes a ‘not horrible’ interface for its text input on the iPhone.
Notes Pro adds a ‘Send to Evernote’ type feature.

Josh suggests (in a mini review sort of way): Notemaster – not to be confused with Note Master
I use NoteMaster for my note-taking app. It has an excellent interface, easy to quickly add new notes, including section headings and pictures from the camera roll or camera. The reason I use it over any other note app is the excellent bi-directional syncing with Google Docs. You set it up to sync all your notes to a particular Docs category. The interface is very simple, but very powerful at the same time.

You can choose fonts and/or backgrounds for individual notes or just use the defaults. You can add multiple images effortlessly inline with with text, as add section headers, which all sync perfectly to Google Docs. If you change or delete a note in Docs, it will reflect in NoteMaster the next time it syncs.

Why do I like it so much? Because when I’m out and about, I want to take quick, easy notes, add a snapshot of whatever i’m noting, and have it immediately in the cloud. Not only for backup purposes, but so that I can access the note from wherever I am. Since I’m already a heavy user of Google Docs, it only makes sense to sync my notes up to it. Then, I can just drag and drop the text and images from the notes into whatever document I am using them in. For a $4 app, it’s priceless!

I’ve never really understood the fascination some folks seem to have with making their one mobile device look very much like a completely different one – making a Windows Mobile phone look like an iPhone, or an iPhone look like a Blackberry or a Windows machine, and so on. So even though I’m already quite the iPad fanboy, I’ve got no interest in turning my iPhone into a mini iPad mockup.

For those who do appreciate making these sort of transformations, good news – there are already several iPad themes out for the iPhone (if you’re jailbroken of course and running Winterboard).

Engadget’s got a post up with a video that shows you how to combine an iPad theme with the Shrink app to reduce your icon size and other effects to bring the iPad UI to your iPhone. Check it out here if you fancy a bit of the iPad touch on your iPhone:

Well, it’s about time I guess. It’s been quite a while since we’ve had any iPhone OS updates, and today we’ve got one. The 3.1.3 update is out now on iTunes.

The only details listed for this update are a couple of bug fixes and a promised improvement in the accuracy of reported battery levels on the iPhone 3GS. Unless there are some huge hidden gems not that haven’t been mentioned, that’s not anywhere near enough to make me want to give up my current jailbreak. I’ll take multitasking over battery %age accuracy any day of the week, thanks very much.

The choice may be a little tougher whenever we see OS 3.2 (the one the iPad runs), but even then, unless they throw in some level of multitasking I’ll likely be sitting it out, as well as hoping and betting that we will get multitasking in 4.0.

What about you all? Will you be updating to 3.1.3? If so, please let us know about anything new that you notice.
